Kalkhoff is renowned for its decades of experience in producing top-quality bikes.

History

Kalkhoff can look back on a long history. For over 90 years bicycles have been produced and sold under the brand name, Kalkhoff. Read here how the former supplier of bicycle tyres became one of the most well known and popular German brands.

A country postman founded Kalkhoff more than 90 years ago

The young country postman, Heinrich Kalkhoff, covered the Cloppenburg lowland area throughout the war years, sometimes on foot, sometimes by bike. His job was to deliver letters and parcels to the farms scattered far apart. This included circulars, or 'junk mail' as we would say today, which he used to read through during his breaks. One day he found himself holding a catalogue from a company in Bielefeld which sold cheap bicycle tyres.

Having been thwarted by a puncture himself on occasion, he asked the farmers if they too were in need of bicycle tyres. The demand was so great that within a very short time Kalkhoff had to deliver almost more bicycle tyres than mail. In 1919, when he was 16 years old, he founded his own Kalkhoff company, dealing mainly in bicycle parts, in the family home.

From assembly business to internationally operating bicycle factory

Kalkhoff began by selling bicycle tyres as a sideline, but by 1920 he was already dealing in second-hand, "... but in perfect condition ...!" gentlemen's and ladies' bicycles and spare parts. In 1923 he began producing his own bicycles together with two employees. As early as 1927 complete bicycles were leaving the "Kalkhoff Production Plant". The ambitious Kalkhoff built up his

small business, first into an assembly business and finally into an internationally operating cycle factory. The "Handmade in Germany" label, relatively low prices and successful adaptation to the design expectations in other countries, e.g. a dummy petrol tank for America and bright colours for the Indonesian market, ensured Kalkhoff's success.

Relocation to Emsteker Feld – old workshops are still the main plant

At first Heinrich Kalkhoff operated from the family home at the Kessener Weg in Cloppenburg. This was in fact an extension, built like stables, and around 250 square metres in size. Only eight years later he had already enlarged the extension to such a degree that it could not only accommodate offices, production facilities, a warehouse and sales area, but also sleeping quarters for his then 15 employees. Over the years the site was constantly altered and extended as both the workforce and production grew. By the start of the war 700,000 bicycle frames had already been produced in Cloppenburg. With a workforce of 70, the "Kalkhoff-Werke" were then one of the major employers in this economically weak region. In the winter months a large proportion of the farming community was employed to lace the spokes of the wheels, for many a vital source of extra income. During the war, however, bicycle production came to a complete standstill. The company was forced to build armaments (armour bolts).

Likewise, in the early post-war years, under the orders of the occupying powers, the company was only allowed to manufacture agricultural products:

potato steamers for pig fattening which, incidentally, also made good schnapps stills, lorry trailers and kitchen stoves. Not until 1950 was bicycle production the focus once more. For it was at this time that the bicycle industry experienced a huge boom in demand. By now the company employed 1,200 people to produce handlebars, seatposts and wheels. Even chainsets were being punched and finished in the company's own electroplating shop. At that time production reached 5,000 frames a day. The company even sold mopeds and motor scooters, while concentrating in particular on the export of bicycles and bicycle parts.

In 1970, because of high demand, the company built another factory almost overnight on the Cloppenburg industrial estate (Emsteker Feld) – complete with its own railway siding for 20 goods wagons. It was here that a centralised distribution warehouse was set up. By 1972 the company was able to celebrate its five millionth bicycle. Then followed a paintshop, an assembly shop and the production building from where Kalkhoff bicycles still go to all the corners of the world even today.

Sensational publicity –Uschi Obermeier rides a Kalkhoff

Sensational publicity and a product range tailored to the spirit of the age were crucial to the success of Kalkhoff bicycles. Uschi Obermeier, icon of Germany's political protest movement of the 1960s, advertised for the Kalkhoff brand on billboards, and other celebrities were photographed on or with Kalkhoff products. And that's not all: as early as 1950 Kalkhoff was advertising with show trucks and had its own exhibition vehicle at major trade fairs. In 1965 the first catalogue was presented to customers. In 1968 Heinrich Kalkhoff passed on the management of the business to his three sons,

Berthold, Karl and Heinz. A key factor in his success had been the ability to adapt his products to the design demands of foreign markets. For example, bright colours were important in Indonesia, whereas bicycles destined for the US market had to have a dummy petrol tank. The spirit of the age defined the range of models. Whereas in the 1960s the high status of professional cycling boosted sales of racing bikes, from 1968 onwards a stronger emphasis on popular sport and the 'keep fit' trend gave rise to new product lines: home exercise bikes and sport and fitness equipment.

Kalkhoff today: a leading comfort and e-bike brand

Today the traditional brand is a part of Derby Cycle Werke GmbH, the largest cycle manufacturer in Germany and the third-largest in Europe. Kalkhoff firmly believes in manufacturing bikes in Germany, choosing to remain in the former "Kalkhoff-Werke". For this reason the "Made in Germany" quality mark on the bikes is much more than just a sales tag – it is a conviction the company lives by.

A long tradition and the ability to recognise major cycling trends mean that Kalkhoff is still one of the most famous brands in Germany. A dip in the fortunes of the brand is also a part of company history. In the mid 1980s the family-owned company was forced to file for bankruptcy, and from then on the Kalkhoff brothers and the cycle brand went their separate ways.
